San Clemente is the closest town to Dana Point Harbor, which makes Dana Wharf the nearest whale watching boat to almost everyone in it. Roughly fifteen minutes up the coast, sailing from the same harbor since 1971 as the first whale watching company in Orange County.

The shortest drive to a whale boat in Orange County

San Clemente to Dana Point Harbor is about seven miles. North on the 5, or up Pacific Coast Highway if you would rather have the water on your left the whole way. Either version is quicker than the queue for parking at the pier on a summer weekend.

The harbor sits right off the 5 freeway and Pacific Coast Highway, and Golden Lantern dead ends into the Dana Wharf lot. Public parking elsewhere around the harbor runs on a four hour limit, so check it against the length of your trip.

Because the drive is so short, an early boat is realistic from San Clemente in a way it is not from further up the county.

The two seasons

December to April, gray whales

Grays pass twice a year on the run to the Baja calving lagoons and back. They travel close inshore, which makes them the most consistent sighting on the calendar. The northbound leg in late winter and early spring often brings calves alongside their mothers.

May to October, blue and fin whales

Warmer water brings krill up the coast and the rorquals come with it. Blue whales, at roughly 80 to 100 feet, are the largest animals that have ever lived. Fin whales are here through the same stretch, along with humpbacks and minke whales.

Dolphins, whenever you go

Common and bottlenose dolphins live off this coast rather than migrating past it. Pods can run to the hundreds, and they will often ride alongside the boat.

Which trip

The two hour Whale and Dolphin Watching Tour is the standard sailing. The Epic 4 Hour Adventure and the 8 Hour Ultimate Whale Watch push much further offshore, which is where the big summer whales tend to be working. Private charters are available for groups, and there is a pelagic birding trip as well.

Half Price Tuesdays apply to whale watching. With a fifteen minute drive, that is an easy habit rather than an expedition, and an Annual Pass is worth the arithmetic if you expect to go more than a few times.

What to bring

More layers than you think, since it is colder on the water and colder still once the boat is moving. Flat shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen. Take anything for seasickness before you board.
