Underrated Fall Favorites: Sheephead and Whitefish

While big names like yellowtail and tuna get most of the attention, fall is also a fantastic time to focus on underrated species that offer loads of fun—and often a cooler full of delicious fillets. Two species we love to target during this time of year? Sheephead and Whitefish.

Meet the Locals

Sheephead are easily recognizable by their bold black-and-pink coloring and powerful jaws, while whitefish are schooling bottom-dwellers known for their tasty, flaky meat. Both thrive in the rocky reefs and kelp forests off Dana Point, which we frequently fish on our 1/2 Day and 3/4 Day trips.

Why Fall is Great

As water temperatures cool and boat traffic slows a bit from the summer rush, these bottom species become more active and less pressured. Whitefish tend to group up in large numbers, making it possible to load up quickly, and sheephead feed aggressively as they bulk up before winter. Plus, fewer surface-feeding pelagics mean we often spend more time over reef structure—perfect for targeting these species.

Easy and Accessible for All Skill Levels

What makes these fish great for anglers of all levels is how accessible they are. Simple dropper loop rigs, fresh bait, and a bit of patience can yield great results. It’s a great entry point for beginners and a satisfying change of pace for veterans.

If you’re looking for a fun, relaxed fall fishing trip with high catch potential and great eating fish, don’t overlook sheephead and whitefish. They just might surprise you.
