The Evolution of Sportfishing Gear: Then vs. Now at Dana Wharf

Since opening our doors in 1971, Dana Wharf Sportfishing has seen massive changes in fishing technology. From rods and reels to sonar and bait systems, today’s gear is more powerful, efficient, and user-friendly than ever. But one thing hasn’t changed — the thrill of the catch.
Back Then: Simplicity & Grit
Early anglers fished with fiberglass rods and heavy reels that were more muscle than finesse. Lines were thick, tackle was basic, and targeting fish relied heavily on knowledge of tides, birds, and gut instinct. Depth sounders were primitive or nonexistent.
Today: Tech-Driven Efficiency
Fast forward to today, and boats are equipped with GPS, sonar, and radar. Lightweight graphite rods, high-speed reels, and braided line allow anglers to cast farther, feel more, and fight bigger fish with precision. Tackle selection is fine-tuned to each species and condition.
Deck Tech:
Our boats have bait tanks with flow systems to keep bait healthy, digital fish finders to scan the seafloor, and even stabilization systems for smoother rides. The combination of advanced gear and experienced captains gives anglers a better shot at success than ever before.
Some Things Stay the Same
The gear may have changed, but the passion hasn’t. Whether you’re holding a rod from 1975 or a brand-new carbon fiber setup, the anticipation of the bite is timeless.
